Masala Daliya | Broken Wheat Khichdi Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup daliya cracked wheat
  • 1/4 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1/4 cup yellow pigeon dal arhar dal
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 medium-sized onion finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 green chili finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 medium-sized tomato finely chopped
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables green peas, carrot, capsicum, potato
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder adjust according to your spice preference
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

For Tempering

  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 whole red chilies
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic diced

Instructions
 

  • Wash and soaked the dal in water for 1-2 hours.
  • Heat oil or ghee in a pan or pressure cooker over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili, and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook the spices for a minute.
  • Rinse the daliya thoroughly under running water and drain it.
  • Add the rinsed daliya and soaked dal to the pan or cooker and mix it with the spice mixture.
  • Pour water into the cooker, stir well, and bring it to a boil.
  • If using a pressure cooker, close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles on medium heat.
  • Once the daliya is cooked, fluff it up with a fork.
  • Add tempering on the top and garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.

For tempering

  • Add oil in tempering pan.
  • Add cumin seeds and when they start splutter.
  • Add garlic and chilies and mix well. Now tempering is ready to further use.
