Misal Pav | Mumbai Misal Pav Recipe

Misal pav is a popular dish from Maharashtra, India. It consists of misal, a spicy curry usually made of sprouted moth beans and pav, a type of Indian bread roll. The final dish is topped with potato-chiwda mix, "farsan" or "sev", onions, lemon and coriander. It is usually served with buns toasted with butter. It is served as a breakfast dish, as a snack and also as a full meal.

Ingredients
  

For Misal Gravy

  • 1/4 Cup Oil
  • 2 Tbsps. Red Chili Powder
  • 1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Cup Matki Sprouts
  • Salt to Taste

For Topping

  • Kanda Poha
  • Farsan
  • Onion Chopped
  • Tomatoes Chopped
  • Coriander Leaves Chopped
  • Lemon Wedges
  • 8 Buns

For Misal Masala

  • 2 Tbsps. Oil
  • 1 Tsp. Ginger Chopped
  • 1 Medium Sized Onion Chopped
  • 2 Small Sized Tomatoes Diced
  • 2-3 Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut Grated
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 1/2 Tsp. Turmeric Powder
  • 1 Tsp. Garam Masala
  • 2 Tbsps. Red Chili Powder
  • 2 Tbsps. Coriander Leaves

Instructions
 

For Misal Masala

  • Heat the oil in pan and fry the ginger and garlic, now add onion and saute few minutes till to golden. 
  • Now add grated coconut and saute few minutes. Add tomatoes and again cook till to soft. Add garam masala, turmeric powder and red chili powder and mix it.
  • Transfer this mixture with coriander leaves and water into jar and grind till to paste .

For Misal Gravy

  • Heat the oil in a pan, add cumin seeds. When they starts splutter, add red chili powder and misal masala, salt and mix it.
  • When Misal masala relase the oil, add matki with water and cook for 15 minutes on medium flame. Add sugar if needed.

For Kanda Poha

  • Heat the oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Once the mustard seeds crackle, add onions, green chilies, turmeric powder, flattened rice, salt, sugar and lemon juice. Mix it well and keep aside.

How to Assemble

  • Spicy Misal is ready to serve with pav and garnished with chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, farsaan, poha, coriander leaves and lemon wedges.
