Shikanji is just like a nimbu pani or lemonade which is also known as shikanjvi or shikanjbeen. Shikanji is one of the most popular drink of India. The base ingredients include lemon or lime juice, ginger juice, ice and water, and other ingredients such as salt and cumin. The delicious drink is a staple across streets of North India during summers. Vendors make many litres of the beverage in advance and store in their big earthen pots covered in red cloth. Earthen pots help keeps the beverage cool.

Traditionally to prepare a glass of shikanji, we need two lemons (squeezed to make lemon juice), one little chunk of ginger, one or two teaspoons of sugar, half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of pepper. Pour chilled water and mix all things together and shake it.  This is a traditional recipe; however, people can experiment using mint leaves, rose water, etc.

So this time I tried Pudina Nimbu flavored Shikanji recipe in which you have to blend the fresh pudina leaves with chilled water, sugar syrup, lemon juice and some shikanji spices like black salt, pepper powder and cumin powder.  Most of time I used chilled soda water for my lemonade recipe which gives nice bubbly taste.

Super cool. I am tempted to make this tomorrow itself. I have fresh mint in my garden and limes in the refrigerator. And the temperatures are climbing here.
