Khechudi is very popular in Odisha. The varieties of khechidi in Odisha include adahengu khechidi (ginger-asafoetida khichdi), moong dal khichdi, etc. Adahengu khechidi is a popular dish in the Jagannath Temple, as well. At home, moong dal khechudi and other khechidis are served with papad, pickle, curd, aaloo bharta, or baigan bharta, raita, dalma, and chutney.

Rice is the staple food of this region. Mustard oil is used in some dishes as the cooking medium, but ghee (made of cow’s milk) is preferred in temples. In old times food was traditionally served on banana leaves or disposable plates made of sal leaves.

  1. The bay leaf addition to sweet khechdii or kheer seems to be a signature style of Odiya cuisine. Meetha khechudi sounds really yum to my sweet loving palate. 🙂
