Tilothu Recipe/ Garhwali Khichdi/ Til Ki Khichdi

Til ki khichdi is a unique and healthy khichdi from Garhwal, Uttarkhand which is made of black sesame seeds, rice and black gram. Til khichdi is generally eaten in winter season, it is keep our body warm and energetic in cold weather. In this khichdi, I used black sesame seeds. This khichdi is known as til ki khichdi, garhwali khichdi, Tilantha or tilothu. It can be served along with curd, pickle, papad or ghee.

What are the benefits of Black Sesame Seeds?

Black sesame seeds are a good source of energy due to the high fat content. They contain healthy fats like polyunsaturated fatty acids and Omega-6. They also contain fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

 

Ingredients

1 Cup Rice

1/2 Cup Urad Dal (Split Black Gram)

4 Tbsps. Black Sesame Seeds

1 Tbsp. Ginger

1 Tbsp. Garlic

2 Green Chilies, Chopped

1 1/2 Tsp. Cumin Seeds

1 Tsp. Coriander Seeds

3-4 Cloves

8-10 Black Peppercorns

1/2 Tsp. Turmeric Powder

Pinch of Asafoetida

Salt to Taste

2 Tbsps. Ghee

 

How to Make Til Khichdi recipe:

Wash and soak the rice and dal in water for alteast two hours. Drain and keep aside.

Dry roast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cloves, black peppercorns in non-stick pan. Keep aside. Dry roast the black sesame seeds till to splutter. Keep aside.

Combine dry roast masalas or spices, sesame seeds, chopped green chilies, ginger, garlic in blender. Grind it till to smooth paste or grounded masala. Keep aside.

Heat the ghee in pressure cooker. Add 1/2 Tsp. cumin seeds, pinch of asafoetida. When they start crackle, add rice and dal and mix well. Saute few seconds. Add salt, turmeric powder and grounded masala with 3 1/2 cup water. Cover with lid and cook till to 3-4 whistles. Transfer into plate and serve hot with extra dollop of ghee, papad and pickle.
