Balaee (Black Chickpea and Rice Khichdi) – Khichdi from Himachal Pradesh

Balaee khichdi is belonging to Himachal Pradesh which is very delicious and healthy recipe. It is really simple and easy to make recipe. It is consider as healthy and nutritious recipe.

Khichdi is really comfort food for all Indian and you can get so many flavors and variations in khichdi recipe throughout the India. Today I share Balaee recipe, a khichdi which made with rice, black chickpeas (kala chana) and buttermilk. You can cook this khichdi in pan or pressure cooker. This khichdi is originated from Kangra valley region of Himachal Pradesh. I love the creamy texture and sour taste of this khichdi.

 

To make this recipe you have to cook the rice and black chickpeas together in buttermilk and spices.

Try some other variation in khichdi recipe: Aamish Khichdi, Moong dal Khichdi, Chana Dal Khichdi, Gujarati Kadhi Khichdi and Oats Vegetable Khichdi.

 

 

Ingredients for Balaee Khichdi:

1 Cup Rice

1/2 Cup Black Chickpeas (Kala Chana)

3 Cups Buttermilk

1 Large Onion, Sliced

1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds

2 Tsp. Coriander Seeds

1/2 Tsp. Fenugreek Seeds

Salt to Taste

1/2 Tsp. Red Chili Powder

1/2 Tsp. Turmeric Powder

2 Tsp. Desi Ghee

 

How to Make Balaee Khichdi:

Wash and Soak the chana in water for atleast 7-8 hours or overnight. Cook in pressure cooker with water till to tender. Wash and Soak the rice in water for 15-20 minutes.  Drain the water and keep aside the rice and chana both. Dry roast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds till to brown and keep aside to cool.  Grind them together in mixer till to fine powder.

Heat the ghee in heavy bottom pan, Add onion and saute till to golden brown. Now add the masala powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt and mix well. Add rice and kala chana and mix well. Add buttermilk and mix well. Cover the pan with lid and cook on medium flame till to cook. Serve hot balaee with extra dollop of ghee and curd. In pan, it takes time to cook. You can use pressure cooker also.

Instructions

  • Wash and Soak the rice in water for 15-20 minutes.
  • Drain the water and keep aside the rice and chana both.
  • Dry roast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds till to brown and keep aside to cool.
  • Grind them together in mixer till to fine powder.
  • Heat the ghee in heavy bottom pan,
  • Add onion and saute till to golden brown.
  • Now add the masala powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt and mix well.
  • Add rice and kala chana and mix well.
  • Add buttermilk and mix well.
  • Cover the pan with lid and cook on medium flame till to cook. 
  • Serve hot balaee with extra dollop of ghee and curd.

  1. Unique Khichadi ! I am just wondering if the black channa would cook along with rice , since I always cook it in a pressure cooker even after soaking .

    Will definitely be trying the Balee Khichadi , it sounds interesting with butter milk .
