Manipuri Khichdi Recipe

Manipuri Cuisine is very simple, organic and healthy. They used generally use rice, leafy vegetables, meat in Manipuri cuisine. After lots of searching about Indian khichdi, I found this recipe and tried it from Srivalli’s blog. I tried this khichdi recipe in very small proportion but taste and texture of this khichdi is similar to North Indian khichdi. It is tasty and delicious khichdi, love the crunch of peanuts.

Manipuri cuisine is the traditional cuisine of Manipur, a state of north east India. Dishes are typically spicy foods that use chili pepper rather than garam masala. Oil is uncommon in most Manipuri styles. The cuisine here is similar to the cuisines of Southeast/ East/ Central Asia, Siberia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

Ingredients for Khichdi:

1 Cup Basmati Rice

1/4 Cup Yellow Pigeon lentil (Toor Dal)

1 Small Onion, Chopped

1 Tsp. Ginger and Garlic Paste

1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds

2 Tbsps. Peanuts, Fried

2 Green Cardamoms

2-3 Cloves

1 Small Bayleaf

2 Whole Red Chilies

2 Tbsps. Oil

1/2 Tsp. Turmeric Powder

Salt to Taste

 

How to Make Manipuri Khichdi recipe:

Wash and soak the rice and dal for 15 minutes. Drain the whole water and transfer into pressure cooker with 3 cups of water, salt and turmeric powder. Cook till to soft or 3-4 whistles. Heat the ghee in non-stick pan, add bayleaf, cumin seeds, cloves, red chilies, cardamom and saute few seconds. Add green chilies, garlic and ginger paste and saute again few seconds. Add chopped onion and fried peanuts, fry till to golden brown. Add this masala into the khichdi and cook for 4-5 minutes more. Mix well. Serve this khichdi with Ooti and papad.

Instructions

  • Cover with lid and cook till to soft or 3-4 whistles.
  • Heat the ghee in non-stick pan, add bayleaf, cumin seeds, cloves, red chilies, cardamom and saute few seconds.
  • Add green chilies, garlic and ginger paste and saute again few seconds.
  • Add chopped onion and fry till to golden brown.
  • Add this masala and peanuts into the khichdi and cook for 4-5 minutes more. Mix well.
  • Serve this khichdi with Ooti and papad.
