To store hummus properly and keep it fresh, follow these guidelines:

Refrigeration: Hummus should always be stored in the refrigerator. The cold temperature helps slow down the growth of bacteria and extends the shelf life of the hummus.

Airtight container: Transfer the hummus to an airtight container with a lid. A glass or plastic container with a tight seal is ideal for preserving the freshness and preventing any odors from seeping in.

Scoop and smooth: Before storing the hummus, ensure the surface is smooth and flat. Use the back of a spoon to create an even surface and remove any air pockets. This helps prevent the top layer from drying out.

Olive oil layer: To further protect the hummus, create a thin layer of olive oil on top. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing air from reaching the surface and drying out the hummus. It also adds flavor and enhances the texture.

Seal the container: Close the lid tightly to ensure a proper seal. This prevents any air from entering the container and maintains the freshness of the hummus.

Refrigerate promptly: Place the container of hummus in the refrigerator as soon as possible after use. The sooner you refrigerate it, the longer it will stay fresh.

Avoid cross-contamination: Use a clean spoon or knife every time you scoop out hummus from the container. This prevents the introduction of bacteria from other foods and extends the shelf life.

Check for spoilage: Before consuming hummus, always inspect it for signs of spoilage. Look for mold, an off smell, or any unusual discoloration. If you notice any of these signs, discard the hummus immediately.

Consume within recommended time: While the exact shelf life can vary based on various factors like ingredients and storage conditions, homemade hummus typically stays fresh for about 3-5 days when properly stored in the refrigerator. Store-bought hummus often comes with a “best by” date, which should be followed for optimal quality.
