Samak Jeera Rice Recipe | Farali Rice Recipe

This time I shared simple and easy recipe of samak rice or samak jeera rice recipe which is probably the best option for the Navratri period. To make this samak jeera rice recipe, cooked barnyard millet in water with salt and cumin seeds. You can serve this jeera samak rice recipe along with aloo ki sabzi, farali kadhi recipe or masala curd.

Barnyard Millet is tiny, white and round grains belongs to millet family. In Indian we cannot consume cereal grains in fasts. So Samvat or samak is a very popular and healthy ingredient for farali recipes. It is sticky once it is cooked and stays a bit soggy. They are somewhat like smaller versions of saboodana look wise. The other Indian names for barnyard millet are Vari, Varai, Sanwa, Samwa and Swang.

Barnyard millet is an appropriate food for patients intolerant to gluten causing celiac disease. This millet is good source of B-complex vitamins.

Ingredients

1 Cup Barnyard Millet or Samak Rice

1 Tsp. Jeera or Cumin Seeds

Rock Salt to Taste

1 Tsp. Lemon Juice

2 Tbsps. Desi Ghee

2 Tbsps. Coriander, Chopped for garnishing

 

How to make Samak Jeera Rice Recipe:

Wash and soak barnyard millet in water for 15-20 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside. Take a non-stick pan and add ghee. Add cumin seeds and saute till to splutter. Add barnyard millet and roast in ghee just for 1 minute. Add 3 cups of water and rock salt and mix well. Cover and cook for 10 minutes on medium flame till to cooked. Add lemon juice and coriander leaves for garnishing and mix well. Remove from the flame and serve hot samak jeera rice as side dish.

    I have never tried barnyard millet before as we get only 1 type of millet here in regular supermarket and it is not the section of the Indian market I have ever really investigated before – next time I will have to check what varieties of millet we get here
