Puran Poli is quite popular traditional recipe which served during festival times as sweet bread. It is known as puran poli in Marathi, boli in Tamil, Bakshalu in Telugu, Holige in Telangana, Obbattu in Kannada and Vedmi in Gujarati. Puran Poli is an Indian Sweet flatbread which cooked and served in many regions of India.
Puran poli is made from chana dal or split yellow gram, plain flour (wheat flour or mixed wheat & white flour), jaggery or sugar, cardamom powder and/or nutmeg powder, ghee and water. Sometimes toor dal is used in Gujarat. Toor dal or togari bele is commonly used in the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well. In Andhra Pradesh (bobbatlu or bakshalu) and other places, moong dal, chana dal or even a mix of lentils is used in some recipes. Other ingredients that may or may not be used are: nuts, dates, turmeric powder.
It’s also the special dish of Maharashtra which is prepared in every occasion at every houses it is eaten with Basundi, Aamras Or Amti with topping of ghee, because Chana dal is heavy to digest and ghee eases to digest. The Puran poli made on khapar is very famous in this poli is big in size and is roast on a big pot made of clay called kapar is heated from down the old lady’s of 90s are expert in making it many people come to eat this special dish from out countries.
Puran Poli is combination of two words puran i.e. stuffing or filling of chana dal and jaggery or sugar, and other hand Poli is bread or dough. Generally Puran poli is served with Aamras or Basundi.

Ingredients
For Poli or Dough
2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 Tsp. Turmeric powder
2 Tsp. Vegetable oil
1/2 Tsp. Salt
For Puran or Stuffing
1 Cup Bengal Gram/ Chana Dal
1/2 Cup Organic Sugar
1/2 Tsp. Cardamom Powder
1/2 Tsp. Funnel Powder
1 Tbsp. Desi Ghee
Ghee for Cooking
How to prepare Puran Poli:
Wash and soak the Bengal gram in water for atleast one hour and boil with 1 cup water till to 4-5 whistles in pressure cooker. Drain the excess water and keep aside. Heat the ghee in non-stick pan and sauté boiled Bengal gram, cardamom powder, sugar and funnel powder together for 10- 15 minutes on medium flame. Keep aside to cool and make fine paste without using single drop of water. Now puran is ready to fill. Divide the puran into 6 equal portions.
Combine wheat flour, turmeric powder and oil together and make soft dough with water and keep aside for 10 minutes and cover with wet clothe. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll it little, add a puran’s portion just like ball in poli and cover it with dough and make flat bread with rolling pin. Now heat the tawa and place it. Grease little ghee on both side and cook till to golden. Serve hot puran poli as sweet flatbread stuffed with lentil mixture.

Very hard to resist puran polis, never said no to this incredible polis. My mouth is just watering here. Feel like having a plate of polis rite now. Dangerously delicious they are.
Pooran Poli the name itself attracts everyone . Very well made polis with Channa daal . I have made the same polis the Gujju way with toor daal . Strange how this sweet poli has different names in different states and are stuffed with various daals .
Channa dal is my fav filling for Puran poli. Made with wheat flour these are a bit guilt free and they look fabulous Preeti.
Yummy..love puran poli and usually Gujaratis serve it with a bowl of ghee, you dunk the poli in it and have it.
whole wheat pura poli came out perfect. I too like adding some aromatic ingredient. surely this fennel seed addition will give a taste.
