Sama ki khichdi or vrat ki khichdi is usually made on Navrarti or Ekadashi fasting days. Sama is a small grain which is round in texture and gluten free. Samak is also known as moriyo, mordhan, vari, varai, sama, samvar or vrat ke chawal. It is known as barnyard millet in English.
This time i shared farali samak khichdi which made by samak rice, potatoes and salt. It can be served with curd, chutney or potato curry. You can add tomatoes also if you can eat tomatoes during fasting.
What is Samak Rice?
This rice is smaller as compared to rice grains. It is also called varai, kodri, samvat or samak chawal. It is called as samo or moriyo in Gujarat. It is small and round in texture. It is used to prepare fasting recipes such as samak khichdi, rice, idli and more. It is gluten free and easy to digest grain.
How to Cook Samak Rice?
This grain is cooked in water like rice or boiled with and sugar as kheer. Sometimes it is fermented to make beer. This seeds are particular eaten during religious fasting.

Ingredients for Samavat Rice Khichdi
1/2 Cup Samak Rice
2 Medium Sized Potatoes, Cubed
2 Green Chilies, Chopped
2 Tbsp. Peanuts, Crushed
1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds
Rock Salt to Taste
Black Pepper Powder to Taste
2 Tbsps. Desi Ghee
2-3 Tbsps. Green Coriander, Chopped
How to Make Samak Rice Khichdi:
Wash, Clean and Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes and drain the excess water and keep aside. Heat the ghee in non-stick pan. Add cumin seeds and slightly roast it. Add green chilies, chopped potatoes, crushed peanuts and roast it. Add salt, black pepper powder and soaked rice and mix it. Add 2 1/2 cups water and stir well. Cover and cook the khichdi on medium heat till to cooked or puffed. Transfer the khichdi in serving plate and garnish with extra ghee and coriander leaves. You can serve this khichdi with coriander chutney and masala curd.

This Khichadi reminds me of my grandma , she would make during Janamasthami and It was only the two of us who would eat .
