Banarasi tomato chaat or Banarasi Tamatar ki Chaat is very popular street food of holy city Banaras. Tamatar ki chaat is very interesting and unique chaat which is made with mish mash of pulpy tomatoes, boiled potatoes, boiled white peas with fried nuts, spices and topped with crushed namakpara and onion.

This Indian street food is really delicious and mouthwatering snack which you can easily prepare at home. I never get the chance to visit Banaras but I tried this chaat in Delhi, in Street food festival 2017. Now I’m sharing my style of tamatar ki chaat which taste and appeal both are same but little less spicy. If you are bored with regular chaats then you can tried this unique and exceptional tamatar ki chaat.

 

What we needed to prepare Tamatar Ki Chaat:

5 Medium Sized Tomatoes, Chopped

1/2 Cup White Peas, Boiled

2 Medium Sized Potatoes, Boiled and Mashed

1 Medium Sized Onion, Chopped

1 Tbsp. Ginger Chili Paste

1 Tbsp. Fried Peanuts

Salt to taste

Red Chili To Taste

Black pepper Powder to Taste

1 Tsp. Garam Masala

1/2 Tsp. Turmeric Powder

1 Tsp. Coriander Powder

1/2 Tsp. Raw Mango Powder

4 Tbsp. Desi Ghee

For Garnishing

Coriander Leaves, Chopped

Onion, Chopped

Sev

Namakpara

Green Chilies, Chopped

 

How to Prepare Tamatar ki chaat at home:

Wash and soak the white chickpeas in water for 3-4 hours and Drain and Transfer into pressure cooker, add water and salt and cook till to tender in pressure cooker. Heat the oil in non-stick pan, add onion and ginger chili paste and saute for few seconds. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt, red chili powder, black pepper powder, garam masala, amchoor and mix well and sauté few seconds. Add Chopped tomatoes, peanuts and cover it till to mashy. Add boiled and mashed potatoes and peas and mix well. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix well. Cover it and cook for few minutes. Remove from the flame. Place the ladleful tomato mixture in serving bowl and topped with onion, sev, green coriander, chilies and papri.

Tamatar Ki chaat is basically a  combination of boiled potatoes, tomatoes, chickpeas, spices and topped with chopped onions, green chilies & some fresh coriander leaves. Garnish with Crushed papris or namakpara for crunchy texture.

    That is such a delicious looking chaat with tomatoes and dried peas. Sounds a little similar to Bengali ghugni but with more tomatoes. Looks yummy!!
