Funnel cakes are made by pouring batter into hot cooking oil in a circular pattern and deep frying the overlapping mass until golden-brown. The batter is commonly poured through a funnel creating its texture and giving its name.

In the Indian subcontinent a similar dessert, with a crystallized sugary exterior coating, is called jalebi, In Iran this is known as zulbia and is a popular dessert. These differ from funnel cake in using no baking powder, which results in a somewhat chewy texture.

Place the metal cookie cutter in the hot oil and make sure you have enough oil to mostly fill the cutter without completely immersing it. Pour the batter in the cookie cutter in a zing zag patten, dont fill the cookie cutter with batter. Cook the funnel cake for 1-2 minute and remove the cookie cutter carefully. Cook the cake till to golden and place the cake on tissue paper to drain. Again place the cookie cutter in the oil and pour a new funnel cake. Cook again with same technique. Tips: Drop a small amount of batter into the oil, it should sizzle and float quickly.

  1. I have seen some videos on fair foods and loved the funnel cake so much. They serve it with variety of toppings which are so drool worthy. Yours with just the sugar dusting also looks fabulous.
